Walking back from class, pink clouds in the sky over the Performing and Screen Arts building.

First day of classes! More of an orientation week, actually. We were shown around our new home, Building 01, a former mental asylum of ill repute in the 1980s converted into a charming Design and Visual Arts (DEVS) school.
Architects, animators, graphic designers, illustrators, painters, and photographers moved about the area with characteristic equipment and portfolios in hand. In the center of the complex was Long Black Cafe, which blended in the environment as an art cafe with bookable exhibit space for students to showcase their works. Students and faculty members congregated in and around the cafe, sipping coffee, having a chat, filling sketchbooks, and generally “being artistic”. One of my professors mentioned how they liked to collaborate with their neighbors in the Performing and Screen Arts school—something I’d really love to do during my stay here. (According to him, Unitec is now considered one of the best film schools in the world.) I was immersed in the lively culture and I could feel the pulse of a thriving and diverse community of artists.
The building itself somewhat reminded of Hogwarts in spirit, with its classic brick architecture and all the winding passages and “secret” doors—I lost my sense of direction fairly quickly while inside. Each “wing” of the artistic asylum housed a division of the DEVS school, and one could indeed feel the “transition” between areas. Floors and walls were appropriately decorated, liberating rooms from their haunted past. Throughout the tour, my class visited the fully equipped photography studio (conveniently adjacent to the cafe) and printing rooms, the “Snow White” art gallery currently featuring the works of one of the professors, the arts-focused library which also lent classic movies, and the two large Mac Labs.
Being an art school, some of the professors were quirky and theatrical for most of the orientation (reminding me of back home), and many of them are practicing artists with exhibits in this year’s Auckland Arts Festival. I hope that the artistic pulse will only get stronger in the coming weeks.
Welcome to "The Station Between Two Worlds". Views from real and cyber space.
My friends know that I like taking photos with my dSLR, and that I like to envision movies and write stories whenever I can. Many of them don’t know how it all started though.
Gaming. Ever since I discovered how to take screenshots of those special moments in cyber space, my imagination only went wilder. And it was a good thing.
So here I am, trying to capture my experiences in two worlds, and share them so that others may experience them too.
I hope you enjoy the random things I have to share, for whatever they’re worth.
